Blackout Newspaper
Blackout Newspaper
2017

In conjunction with the Women's March on January 21st 2017 Janina Anderson and Rebecca Munce performed a 12 hour public art piece entitled, "Blackout Newspapers". The piece consisted of some 40 newspapers from Montreal and abroad where headlines of Trump's inauguration were blacked out using the threads of a sewing machine. The public were asked to donate their own newspapers for black out, and donations were collected for planned parenthood. By blacking out Trump's likeness and inauguration headlines, the artists sought to demonstrate their resistance to the Trump administration.

Executed in solidarity with the women's march, Munce and Anderson sought to harness sewing, a medium traditionally associated with femininity, as a powerful tool for refusal and erasure of any attempts to normalize the increasingly fascistic regime of the Trump administration.
